Vince Dooley honored with 2016 Man of Achievement Award
ATLANTA, GA — Vince Dooley was honored with the Man of Achievement by the Phi Kappa Theta Foundation. The Man of Achievement Award, started in 1980 and awarded by the Foundation’s Board of Trustees, is the highest honor bestowed upon Brothers of Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity. The award recognizes members who have risen to prominence in their chosen fields of endeavor. Dooley was recognized during the Fraternity’s Annual Alumni Reception on August 30, 2016 in Atlanta, GA.
Vince become the head football coach for the University of Georgia in 1963 and remained until 1989. He also served as the Director of Athletics from 1979 to 2004. Vince has surpassed many milestones in his career, such as becoming the most successful coach in Georgia history, he was the 9th head coach to have over 200 wins, he won the 1980 National Championship, and 6 SEC titles. during his tenure. He has been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, and the Marine Corps Sports Hall of Fame. In 2019, the University of Georgia recognized Vince by renaming the field in Sanford Stadium to “Dooley Field” in his honor.
After becoming the head coach for University of Georgia football, Vince became an advisor for the Georgia Delta Rho chapter of Phi Kappa Theta. He served as a mentor for the young students and provided them with assistance when he could. In 1980, he was initiated as a member of Phi Kappa Theta for his service to the fraternity.
Vince earned a Bachelor’s degree in business management from Auburn University and he later returned to Auburn University to obtain his master’s degree.
