Edward Sweeney honored with 2010 Man of Achievement Award
ST. LOUIS, MO— Edward Sweeney was honored with the Man of Achievement by the Phi Kappa Theta Foundation. The Man of Achievement Award, started in 1980 and awarded by the Foundation’s Board of Trustees, is the highest honor bestowed upon Brothers of Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity. The award recognizes members who have risen to prominence in their chosen fields of endeavor. Sweeney was recognized during the Fraternity’s 2010 Leadership Institute in St. Louis, MO.
Sweeney has had an illustrious professional career. H was elected to the Missouri House of Representatives in 1974, 1976, and 1978 where he was elected as House Majority Whip and served as the Chair of the House Committee on Civil and Criminal Justice. In 1988, he was elected as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention. He then served as an Assistant Circuit Attorney from 1986-1997. He was then later appointed Circuit Judge by Governor Bob Holden on January 6, 2005.
Sweeney has been actively involved in number of organizations. He served two years active duty in the U.S Army as an artillery officer in the 101st Airborne Division. He was awarded the Bronze Star, as well as Vietnam campaign and service ribbons. He was also involved in the 101st Airborne Division Association, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, and Saint Joan of Arc parish.
Sweeney earned a Bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Missouri, where he was initiated into the Missouri Kappa Upsilon chapter of Phi Kappa Theta. He then went on to obtain his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Law.
